Do you love succulents as much as I do? They are my absolute favorite plants! I grow, propagate and transplant succulents on a consistent basis. Below, I will show you exactly what I do to transplant my succulents.

It is important to ensure that there is enough drainage. Succulents love to be thoroughly watered, but that water needs to be able to drain down so that the roots do not get clogged and turn into root rot. So, you will want to start with quarter sized rocks. It doesn’t matter what kind they are.

Preparing Drainage for Succulents

Put a handful of these rocks into the bottom of your pot. Then, pour a layer of gravel on top of the quarter sized rocks. After that, dump a nice layer of sand over top of the rocks, to cover them. These layers should fill up the bottom 1/3 of the pot. Finally, tap the pot gently to allow the layers to settle and then set it aside for the time being.

Preparing the Soil to Transplant Succulents

mixing soil; transplanting succulents

Once you have the pot prepared for the succulent transplant, you will need to prepare the soil. Succulents do not like heavy soil that holds moisture. Rather, they love soil that is lightweight and a mixture of various components. There are many ways to mix your soil. You can start with regular garden soil and lighten it up by mixing in peat moss, sand, fine mulch, lava rocks and potting soil. Then, add perlite, which helps with aeration and drainage.

Transplanting your Succulents

Once your soil is mixed, then it’s time to transplant your succulents! This is the fun part! First, grab your pot that you prepared earlier and fill it almost to the top with your new soil mixture. Then, pick up your succulent and carefully tip it upside down into your hand.

Next, gently squeeze the container and pull the plant out of the pot. After that, lightly separate the roots, just a tiny bit and then set your succulent into your new pot. Finally, put a little bit of soil around the sides of your plant and then set it under either in sunlight or under grow lights.
