Do you like green onions? My family LOVES them!! We eat them in all kinds of foods including tacos and pasta. In addition to eating green onions, we also like to grow them. Have you ever tried to grow green onions? It’s actually SUPER EASY!!

Ways to Grow Green Onions

There are several ways that you can grow green onions. The first way is in a traditional garden. Plant the seeds in soil, then water them and make sure that they have plenty of sunlight. Next, water them some more, every day or every other day, depending on the weather.

Second

The second way to grow them is to plant them in soil in a pot, either indoors or outside. If you plant the seeds in a pot, it would be similar to growing them in the ground. First, you would plant the seeds and then water them. Again, you would make sure they have plenty of sunlight.

In the case where they are indoors, you would want to make sure that they are either by a window that gives them lots of sunlight, or perhaps add grow lights.

Third

The third way to grow green onions is actually a super fun science experiment! Either take a bunch of them from your garden, roots and all or purchase a bundle from the farmer’s market or your local grocery store. Then, rinse the roots very well. After that, cut the bottom part of the onions off at about one inch above the actual roots.

Eat the tops of the onions that you cut off. Next, put the roots in a small glass jelly jar. Fill the jar with fresh water to the point just below the tops of the roots. Finally, sit the jar in a windowsill where it can get plenty of sunlight.

The first picture below shows growth after literally just one day. The second picture below shows growth after just a few days. Green onions grow super fast!

The third picture below shows what the green onions will look like after only about a week of sitting in the windowsill.

These onions are ready to eat! All you do is cut off from the tops the amount of onions that you need for your recipe and they will keep growing. You can regrow these multiple times before they become too thin. At that point, you will start the whole process all over again.

If you look closely at the picture, you will notice the jar of romaine lettuce. You can literally regrow lettuce in the same exact way that you grow your onions.
